“Evening Tide” is the sister tune to “Morning Tide”. They are both inspired by the British coastline. Both on overcast days although “Morning Tide" in the Autumn and “Evening Tide” was in the spring after the clocks went forward. They are also both inspired by the works of Ludovico Einaudi and based heavily in minimalism.
When I wrote this piece I remember wanting a main chord pattern that I could jump back to between the melody line. The melody is up high whilst the chord pattern is lower down. I like the contrast between the two lines.
As I had already added a string part to “Morning Tide”, I wanted to mirror this with “Evening Tide”. I was fairly brave with this track as almost the first minute is written only for strings. I got this idea from a piece by Einaudi called “Fuori Dalla Notte”. I think it works quite well although I'm still not fully happy with the string parts later in the piece.
This is the longest track from “Third Perspective” because of the extended intro.
I always wanted to have the two tide pieces opening and closing the album as I thought it told a story so these two were planned from the offing. I feel though that “Evening Tide” stays in it's sister's shadow a bit. I prefer to play “Morning Tide” anyway!
As it so happened it was not the last track on the album and was bumped up one! There was a reason for this but I'll share that with you in the last programme note of “Third Perspective”. The essay is nearly done!
