Programme Notes - Embrace

“Embrace” is one of the older tracks off of “Third Perspective” and also the longest is you remove string parts from other tracks.  It was born one evening when sitting at the piano and playing some soft, slow, delicate chords.  I then let the music evolve around these chords until the music finally works it's way back to the original chord progression.

My wife, Kate, was sitting and reading a magazine but stopped to listen and after I had finished playing she came over to me and gave me a big hug and told me that she loved this new piece.  I named it “Embrace” after her reaction.

I decided to keep “Embrace” as a solo piano piece on “Third Perspective” as I felt that the slower, more intimate pieces worked better as solo pieces.

“Embrace” was one of the last additions to “Third Perspective” as I knew I wanted one more really calm piece of music to start to wrap up the album.  After releasing an EP or album I always find it interesting to see whcih tunes get more airplay and love and which don't stick.  Considering that “Embrace” sits towards the end of the album I was quite surprised at it's popularity.  After the promoted singles off of the album, it is easily the best performing piece of music.  This information is always very helpful as to figuring out what sort of music to release or promote next.  I have a lot of compositions to record and release so there is no urgency to write new material yet so it gives me ideas where to go in the future.

Strangely, “Embrace” doesn't get much love from me! I don't really play it very often but maybe I should tinker with it a bit more.

Only two more tracks left to detail for you from “Third Perspective”.  Polar opposites in popularity, my best performing and least performing pieces from the album!
